iOS 7.1 Available To Download Today

For our friends with Apple devices, there is an update that became available today that will install the most up to date and current iOS for your Apple devices.  iOS 7.1 is available now.

Alongside the usual bug fixes this update you'll also find:

  • CarPlay - supports iPhone calling, music, maps, and messaging as well as allows the user to control certain functions through Siri.
  • Siri improvements - speaking of Siri, you can now use it (her) in push to talk mode.  Simply hold the home button for the duration of your query.
  • Calendar changes - Country specific holidays added for many locations, also list view has returned for month view.
  • iTunes Radio updates
  • Accessibility additions
  • Camera settings improved - Includes a setting that allows HDR mode for iPhone 5s users.
  • Touch ID - Fingerprint recognition has been improved.
If you update your devices today you can expect the download to be relatively small, as is usual there are millions of others downloading the same update.  It's also recommended that you use a Wi-Fi connection to download the update as it's a rather large size file.

Windows XP

April 8th, 2014 is the final day of official Microsoft support for Windows XP.  We wanted to let you know what that means for you, our friends and patrons, if you're still running a computer that is XP.

First, what it does NOT mean:

  • It does not mean that your computer will stop working or self destruct on April 8th.  At least not because of Microsoft's decision to cease support.  You'll be able to keep using it as you were.  However, you may want to proceed with caution (see below).

What it does mean:

  • If you connect to the internet with an XP computer you could be exposed to security issues.  This is because those Windows updates you see from time to time will no longer occur and often times those patched vulnerabilities in that system.
  • Any new connected devices may not work properly.  For example, if you have a Windows XP computer connected to a printer and you have to replace the printer, it may not work or work properly with your older computer.
Thirteen years is a long time for anything computer related.  That's how long XP was out and supported by Microsoft.  Since XP, they've built and been supporting Vista, Windows 7 and most recently Windows 8 (8.1).  Those products will continue to receive Microsoft support.

At TSI RadioShack, in Kalona, we would be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding this issue and if you decide that now is the time to upgrade we're making sure that we have plenty of new computers and laptops in stock to choose from.
